Discovered by Christopher Columbus en route between Panama and Hispaniola (present day Haiti/Dominican Republic) in May of 1503 during his 4th voyage the Caymans consist of three islands: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.
Columbus referred to the two smaller islands: Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, as Las Tortugas due to the abundance of sea turtles he observed in the area. But the Admiral could ill afford to spend time exploring. With two worm-eaten ships requiring non-stop manual pumping and bailing just to stay afloat, the legendary explorer quickly moved on,.
Although the islands became be well known as a good source for turtle meat in the years following their initial discovery by Columbus, the Las Tortugas name didn’t stick. A map published in 1523 gave their name as Los Lagartos, Spanish for ‘The Lizards’. As it turned out sea turtles weren’t the only reptiles who called the islands home. Also present were marine crocodiles, or caimán as the Caribs called them. Soon sailors were referring to the uninhabited islands as the Los Caimans, later Anglicized to The Caymans by the British.
The Spanish had little use for the islands other than the provisioning of their ships with water, timber and food in the form of turtles, iguanas and seabird eggs. Pirates preying on these Spanish vessels also frequented the islands in search of provisions, but due to their close proximity to Jamaica – and the Spanish authorities stationed there – were not inclined to establish any type of permanent base or settlement. Famed Englishman Sir Francis Drake paid a brief visit in 1585 with a flotilla of 23 ships. Spending two days on Grand Cayman he found the island uninhabited by humans but teeming with alligators, iguanas and turtles. Forty five years later, in 1630, 120 Dutch sailors were shipwrecked for 16 weeks on the northern coast of Grand Cayman before rescuing themselves by building a new boat out of salvaged wood and successfully sailing north to Cuba.
Exactly one hundred and fifty two years to the day after being discovered and claimed for Spain by Christopher Columbus control of the Cayman Islands passed to the English following their successful invasion and capture of Spanish controlled Jamaica. With the way was now clear, settlers began arriving on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac from Jamaica in 1661. But these initial attempts were stymied by repeated attacks from Spanish privateers and it would be another 60 years before the islands were safe enough for settlements to take root and begin to thrive.
